During the Winter Session, children will be a part of the DO-GOODERS! This class will focus on developing and expanding your child's impact in their community. Over the course of the 6-weeks, your child will learn how they can make a difference by doing good works: environmental stewardship, practicing the Golden Rule, and noticing the needs of others. They will develop a plan on how they could "do good" and put that plan into action. This might involve a community campaign of posters in the neighbourhood, encouraging friends to join in and help, collecting funds to help a local charity or non-profit.

During the Spring Session, children will be a part of the TINKERERS! This class will focus on child-led innovation, imagination, trial & error. Over the course of the 12-weeks, children will have the opportunity to take small mechanical items apart and put them back together again using real tools, create marble runs, work with pulleys & gears, and create a Rube Goldberg machine! They will work to sketch out their ideas, work independently, in small groups and as a large group. This will allow for them to practice listening to others ideas, share their own ideas, collaborate, make decisions, and accept or reject ideas with respectful discussion.

Join Angela & Zoe, your child’s hosts and guides, as they work with them to discover, appreciate, and steward a meaningful curriculum that excites and motivates. Afternoon Home Learners Pod is offered from 1pm to 4pm in an unhurried rhythm that will awaken your child’s sense of wonder. Children will spend their time outside having fun together while strengthening their bonds to each other and to nature.

Children will have the opportunity to experience the 6 elements of risky play!

Play with Great Heights

Play with Rapid Speeds

Play with Dangerous Tools

Play near Dangerous Elements

Rough and Tumble Play

“Disappearing or Getting Lost” Play

Children will learn how to assess their “risky play” by completing a self-awareness and self-confidence checklist prior to participating. This will involve asking themselves questions like “do I feel safe?”, “have I practiced enough in other areas so that I am ready for this challenge?” Children will work with their educators to build the necessary skills needed in order to tackle their “risky play” in responsible and safe ways. Their educators will be with the children to monitor and “spot” each child as they play!

Your child will build meaningful relationships with their classmates and their educators.

Discover

Children will discover their abilities while discovering new ideas. Extended periods of time to take the information learned and apply it in a practical & mearningful way. We will discover through weekly challenges, through story and each other, skills that will grow with them. Discovery through their experiences of trial and error, practice, persistence & creativity.

Appreciate

Children will develop a deep appreciation for the creativity of inventors, makers, philanthropists & story tellers that have formed much of what we know. Appreciation of the ideas and concepts of early inventors, makers, philanthropists & story tellers begins with an understanding that we are benefitting from their creativity, determination, and focus to make something new or to solve a problem. Learning to use concepts & tools effectively, becoming aware of the impact we have on our communities, and valuing the skills and effort of inventors, makers, philanthropists & storytellers from the generations before us. Appreciating ingenuity, perserverance, and problem-solving.

Steward

Children will learn that we are caretakers of the Land. It is up to us as community citizens to know how our impact on the Land will affect our generation and generations that come after us. Children will learn about the impact that throwing out unused or broken items has on our environment. They will learn that repairing & repurposing items is a necessary way for us to limit our negative impact on the abundance of trash waste that is produced. Children will learn that their purchasing power can in fact make a difference in protecting our Land and its inhabitants.
